THE DONATION – The Sinopia
In the upper part, we see the delegation led by Amanieu d'Albret, meeting the Hospitallers.
In the lower part, Amanieu on one knee gives the Commander of the Hospitallers, sitting on his ceremonial chair, the gifted deed.
(The explanation for this is given by the inscription above the two scenes.)
H(I)C (A)MANEVS DE LEBRID Q(U)I DAT HA(N)C ECCLE(SI)AM CV(M) DECIMIS D(E)O ETHOSP(I)TALI IH(E)R(U)S(A)LEM IN PERPETV(M). ISTI HOSPITALARE ACCIPIV(N)T DONV(M) BENE.
"Here Amanieu of Lebrid gives this church with tithes to God and the Knights of Jerusalem, perpetually. The Hospitallers receive this gift with gratitude. "
Contemplating this panel, questions come to mind.
Experts say that scenes from the donation were made after the other paintings.
Then me and others have wondered how to explain that the coating of the lower band covers some places the painting of the donation?
If this scene is actually the later, then two hypotheses are possible:
- This panel has been left empty for an unknown reason , which would explain the lack of thick coating.
- The coating, and thus a Gospel scene was scratched to make room for the donation!
I have an idea, give me time to check out some details and I will give it you eventually.
